Time for another round of trivia from the Deacon. With this year's baseball draft concluding this week we have four draft related questions.
1. The Red Sox have never picked first in the MLB draft. Only one player who was taken first overall in the draft by another team has played for Boston, Who is that player?
2. Who was the first player ever drafted by the Red Sox after MLB established the draft?
3. In 2010 the Red Sox drafted LSU pitcher Anthony Ranaudo in the supplemental round of the draft. Which free agent did the Sox lose to gain this extra pick?
4. In this year's draft the Sox first pick in the first round was Arizona State shortstop Deven Marrero. Who was the last shortstop drafted by Boston with their first pick in the first round?
1. Rick Monday
ReplyDelete2. Tony Armas
3. Jason Bay
4. Dustin Pedroia
1. Andre Dawson
ReplyDelete2. Tony Conigliaro
3. Jason Bay
4. Pedroia was not a first round pick...Nomah
1. Brett Saberhagen
ReplyDelete2. Jim Lonborg
3. Jason Bay (I'm a trend-follower, apparently)
4. Will Middlebrooks
Barry is right about #4, Dustin Pedroia though the Sox first pick and as a SS was a ssecond round pick. However, it also not Nomah. Otherwise, there are no correct answers for anyone.
ReplyDelete#1 Rick Monday was the first player taken in the 1965 draft, which the first baseball draft ever. But he never played for Boston.
#2 On of the answers was close.
#3 In 2010 the Red Sox drafted Bryce Brentz and Brandon Workman as compensation for losing Jason Bay. If Brentz's first name was Barry the Sox would have traded Jason for Barry and Brandon!
#4 Middlebrooks was a high school SS, but taken in the fourth round.
#2 One of the answers is close, I meant
ReplyDelete1. ??
ReplyDelete2. Billy Conigliaro
3. Coco Crisp
4. Casey Kelly
1. Adrian Gonzalez
ReplyDelete2. Billy Conigliaro
3. Alex Gonzalez
4. Jose Iglesias
Barry and Jason both have #2 correct. Billy C was the first player ever drafted by Boston, in the first round of the 1965 draft.
ReplyDeleteJason also has the first question right. Adrian Gonzalez was the first overall pick in the 2000 draft, picked by the Florida Marlins.
Still no correct guesses on #3.
On #4 Barry did not give the answer I am looking for, but I have to admit I overlooked Kelly who was drafted in the first round in 2008 listed a a SS/RHP. So give Barry extra credit points and let's rephrase the question to read who was the last "strictly" SS drafted in the first round as the Sox first pick before Deven Marrero
1. Adrian Gonzalez
ReplyDelete2. Billy C
3. Mike Lowell
4. Kolbrin Vitek
3. Brad Penny
ReplyDeleteNeither Lowell or Penny were the free agents lost, but both have something in common with the right answer. Vitek was drafted as a 2nd baseman, the correct answer was involved in an unusual trade when he left Boston.
ReplyDelete3. David Ross
ReplyDelete4. Adam Everett
In 1998 Baseball Draft, the Red Sox took SS Adam Everett as their first pick in the first round, and he is the last SS taken as the first round/first pick ( except for SS/P Casey Kelly as Barry pointed out) before Deven Marrero this year.
ReplyDeleteDavid Ross is not the free agent lost to gain the compensation to draft Ranaudo. Although when Ross left Boston I believed he played for the same team as the player we are looking for.
3. Takashi Saito
ReplyDeleteJeff Conine
ReplyDeleteThe player is not Saito or Conine. The player in question has been described on occasion as a borderline Hall of Famer ( not by me, but I have heard it thrown around before)
ReplyDelete1. Gonzo
ReplyDelete2. Billy C
3. Derek Lowe
4. Adam Everett
#3 is not DLowe, but he is a pitcher, and he is now retired. A career National Leaguer expect for his stint in Boston.
ReplyDeleteJohn Smoltz
ReplyDeleteSmoltz is a good guess, but not right. This pitcher did leave Boston and sign with the Braves, Smoltz' team of note. He left Boston after 2009 after spending part of a season in the Hub. He retired one year later finishing his career in Atlanta.
ReplyDeletePaul Byrd
ReplyDeleteHow about Mark Wohlers
ReplyDeleteLatest guesses are incorrect for #3. The person who is the correct answer is fifth all time in saves.
ReplyDeleteBilly Wagner
ReplyDeleteJason wraps up the draft edition with a correct guess of Billy Wagner, for 2 months or so of Wagner's services the Sox drafted Kolbrin Vitek and Ranaudo. Hopefully it turns out to be one of Theo's stronger moves.
