6/2 Game 2 at Toronto

The Red Sox (27-25) took game 1 of the series in Toronto last night 7-2 behind great pitching by Clay Buchholz.  The Red Sox are now tied with the Blue Jays (27-25) for fourth place in the division and both teams are only 3 games out of first place.  Game 2 of the series takes place today at 1pm in Toronto.

LHP Felix Doubront (5-2, 3.86) takes the mound for the Red Sox against RHP Kyle Drabek (4-5, 4.55) for the Blue Jays. Gonzalez and Ortiz have very good numbers against Drabek so watch their at bats closely to gauge what type of day the Sox will have offensively.  Daniel Nava is back in the lineup today after Bobby V all but saying he would have the day off last night, but you gotta have him back in there after going 4 for 5 with 3 doubles.

Here is the lineup:

Nava LF
Aviles SS
Gonzalez RF
Ortiz DH
Salty C
Youkilis 1B
Sweeney CF
Middlebrooks 3B
Punto 2B

Doubront SP

On paper this matchup looks favorable for the Sox, Doubront has been pitching great and Drabek is the type of pitcher the Sox left handed batters can pound.  So look for Toronto to win today's game and put up some runs early against Doubront.  Leave comments here to let us know who you think will win the game today.

  1. The redsoxmaineiacs are back on the baseball show! Jessica Moran just read our question from twitter to Lou Merloni. Brandon I have to give you credit I stole your idea for our question. It's at the 1:43 mark of the show if anyone has dvr and wants to go back and check it out or watch the re run at noon time.

  2. The Blue Jays are Punto'd as the Sox move a game closer to first place.

  3. Sweet! The Maineiacs make a repeat appearance on the Baseball Show! I'm assuming it was your tweet asking whether we should look to trade Morales and call up Melancon/Mortensen? That's great!

Speaking of great, Sox beat the Jays again today and have already won the weekend series. Doubie pitches well again and notches win #6 on the season. Daniel Nava continues to be hotter than lava and Nick Punto goes 3 for 4. Read that last sentence again. This team continues to baffle and delight me. Get your brooms out for tomorrow! Also, look for the Celtics to tie up the Eastern conference finals tomorrow! Woo hoo!

  4. Punto has been the brunt of many jokes this season and Sean McAdam threw dirt on him on the Baseball Show today by calling him old and finished. However, I still maintain that given a week or two of consistent AB's he could fill in admirably for any of the injured IF's minus 1B.

The really fun thing about this team is that a new hero emerges seemingly every game. They seem to be bonding over the fact that they are made up of misfits and several of them are playing out of position. I hope that they don't lose this later in the year when players start to come back from injury. The key throughout all of this has been and always will be the starting pitching and if they can stay healthy they have a chance to be one of the best rotations in the AL. Hard to believe we are saying that and believing it after the April and early May that we had. Now if we can just get Lester to pitch a little better we will really have something.

Let's sweep the Jays and bring on the Orioles. We may be in first place by the time we get back into interleague play!! As of right now the Orioles beat TB today so we are 2 games out of 1st place and the Yanks are losing to the Tigers 2-0 in the 5th so the Sox could be .5 a game out of 3rd place by the end of the night. (I'm assuming that the standings are up to date).

  5. Just to illustrate the "misfits" angle Barry mentioned, have you noticed NESN is running a couple of Red Sox promotional ads. One features Middlebrooks and Daniel Nava, the other also includes Che-Hsuan Lin and I think Scott Podsednik. Just imagine one month ago if someone told you NESN is promoting the Sox during a successful run by trumpeting Daniel Nava and those others guys??!!

    1. It really is unbelievable, but that what's makes this team so fun to watch!
