Sox go for 2 in a row

The Red Sox are leading 3-0 in the bottom of the 5th in their bid for two wins in a row at home.  Doubront has been pitching great.  There is plenty to discuss including Dice K's rehab start for Pawtucket today and game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals for the Celtics.  They currently trail in the 2nd quarter.

Feel free to leave comments and check back here for updates of both the Red Sox and Celtics games.

  1. We have a starting pitcher who has had a great start now heading into the 6/7th innings and getting up over 100 pitches. Suddenly, he is starting to miss his spots and give up hits/runs. The bullpen is slow in getting up and ready. Stop me if you've heard this story before.

Doubie has been great tonight, though.

Barry, you might be right about the young athleticism of the 76ers being a bad matchup for the Celts. But as long as they can keep it close they'll be a good bet to win the endgame.

    1. I agree with that assessment. If the Celts can keep it close I think they can pull it out especially at home so it's a good thing they have home court advantage. However, if the Celts don't hold home court and lose game 1 or 2. They may lose the series in 5 as I predicted. I think it's more likely that the Celts pull out at least one home win and this series goes to 7 games.

  2. Oh, and yeah, Dice-K looks like he is a AAA pitcher at this point of his career. I suppose we should hold off on making a final judgment until he is completely rehabbed, but we don't have time to bring him up to Boston and give him starts and let him work his way back into being a major league pitcher.

    1. Once Dice K completes his full rehab assignment and they have to make a choice on him I think they may release him unless there is an injury in the rotation.

  3. Doubront gets through 6 IP with 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, and 5 K's on 109 pitches. He still needs to work on his efficiency, but that is the best start by any Sox pitcher in a while.

  4. Doubront's best start. Maybe not his best stats, but definitely his cleanest start of the year. Ross just hit an absolute BOMB to make it 4-1 going to the 7th.

  5. It's two in a row for the Sox with a 4-1 win over the Indians. Doubront gets the win and Aceves gets the save. Celts are within 2 in the 3rd quarter.

  6. Man, it was great to see this team win a game with a balanced overall effort. They got a quality start, their bullpen didn't allow a hit, their defense was good, and they scored enough runs. This is the kind of win they simply haven't had enough of this season. Let's hope it's contagious.

By the way, it was a small thing, but I loved that Fettuccine and Salty Dog had a little fist-bump-explosion choreographed celebration after closing out the game. Those are the kind of silly little signs of a healthy team. Startin' to come together, Pepper, startin' to come together.

  7. Great points on the balanced effort tonight I think it was their best game of the season. One hidden thing that I liked was timely hitting, Ross got his HR right after the Indians had scored to make it 3-1 and he got that run right back to make it 4-1. Those types of intangibles are key to the confidence of a team and as we've documented they've been pretty much non-existant.

I didn't notice the choreographed fist bump, but I agree that it's good to see things like that. I also like what I've seen from this team the last two nights in terms of chemistry. (I realize it's easy to say that when they win) I like the fact that they've had guys on the top step cheering for each other and I saw Aviles and others pump up Doubront when he got out of a jam in the 6th tonight. Ultimately the key has been the pitching not the chemistry, but they are starting to come together Pepper!

    3. I don't mean to toot my own horn, but the Celtics game played out exactly as I said it could. Celts hung around early, then the wily vets took over in the endgame and they take game 1, 92-91. Fun team to watch. Not the most athletic any more, but tough as nails.

    4. Toot-Toot! That was a "sneaky" good win
