Opening Day is finally here

Well gentleman opening day is finally here.  Time to put the predictions to the test and start playing games for real.  I feel like a kid on Christmas morning, excited to open up a new present but not sure what I'm going to get.  You can't beat the optimism of opening day however.  Don't forget to check out the WZON BBQ with Deacon Art trivia if you are in the Bangor area.  Lots of good Sox talk there to kick off the new season.

I want to use this post as a running diary of the opening day events and game.  I'll kick it off with my lineup prediction for today:

Ellsbury CF
Pedroia 2B
Gonzalez 1B
Youkilis 3B
Ortiz DH
Ross LF
Saltalammacchia C
Sweeney RF
Aviles SS

Lester SP

Feel free to let me know your line up thoughts and any other thoughts (score predictions) in the comments section.  How do you all feel? Confident? Nervous?  I just can't wait for the game to begin.  2012 here we go!!   Happy Opening Day everyone!!!

  1. Well as I posted my lineup prediction Pete Abraham of the Globe posted the actually line up on boston.com. Literally two minutes ago. ;)

  2. Happy New Years Day, Sox fans!! Cannot wait for the game to get started. A pitching matchup of the top two finishers in the 2012 AL Cy Young balloting ( 1. Lester 2. Verlander). After all the gnashing of teeth all spring Bobby V rolls out essentially the same lineup as last year. Enjoy the game, keep checking here for updated and commentary.

  3. We are one hour out...prediction Red Sox 4 Tigers 2

  4. I will take Sox 3-2, it should be a pitcher's duel...prediction aside I have a hunch more runs that we expect could be scored, how is that for straddling both sides of a question.

  5. Predictions: 6 beers before 2PM MST. I'm not going back to work. Nobody swings by my desk needing anything anyway (fingers crossed). Sox 3-1. Verlander Loss 0 ER.

  8. Deacon how did the BBQ go? I tried to listen online while at school, but all they were playing was the stupid political show (Ed Schultz).

  9. Hey Fellas! I'm home now and watching the game. Lester and Verlander are straight dealing. I too tried to get the WZON Opening Day BBQ on the computer, but all I could get was Blabbermouth Schultz. Give us the full recap Deacon! Oh, and also if you post your Deacon Art Trivia to the blog, I will tweet it out on our Twitter account as well and we can all take a stab at the answers in the comments section.

  10. First two reach in the bottom of the 5th with a hit and a walk, but Lester gets the next 3 in order. End of 5 0 to 0.

  11. Nice Catch by Brooks Robinson at 3rd base

  12. The BBQ went well, I think the turnout was down some from past years, but it was a different location than before. I had a chance to mention the blog and gave out the address on air. I believe there on line broadcasting is just their political shows only. I ha ad forgot this until you both mentioned the difficulty. I gave out a bunch of flyers and Clem and Toby Nelson of the station kept theirs to refer to throughout the season.

    1. Too bad that the numbers were down a little, but it sounds like a good time nonetheless. Great Job getting the maineiacs their first on air mention!! That's great that Clem and Toby are going to refer to it throughout the season. Are you guys doing Ground Round sessions this season?? Anyway, great job with public relations today Deacon!!

  13. Nasty Yakker from Verlander gets Ortiz to strikeout and the Sox strand two in the top of the 6th. Get the feeling that somebody is going to break through and score some runs soon.

  14. Tigers draw first blood. 1-0 may be enough today.

  15. Dammit... 1-0 Tigers after 7.5

Hopefully Detroit brings out Valverde for the 9th it's the only chance we have to get a run today.

  16. At the moment WZON is planning to rotate the monthly live shows at different locations rather than the Ground Round every month. The first place is supposedly Beef O'Brady's, but no date is set yet.

  17. Going for a little bit of variety. Good idea.

Sox down 2-0 going to the top of the 9th with Valverde coming in. Gonna need a comeback to win this one.

  18. Dammit, I have a feeling that 0-2 fastball from Valverde to Papi is going to be the best chance we get this inning.

  19. Ciriaco would be on third by now

  20. Sweeney makes up for getting turned around in RF on Jackson's triple with a triple of his own!!!

  21. Ryan Sweeney best pick up of the offseason. Who was that other guy that Oakland threw in the deal? wink, wink

  22. Where in the heck did that ball hit I thought it was over fence?

  23. Sonuva...well the bullpen has no where to go but up...dammit!!

  24. Well, we got the Verlander performance we feared all winter, pretty gutsy ninth to tie it, though. If the last ball is at Punto instead of by him it is another DP. Just one game, but the Sox really need to find a way to at least split these first tough 15 games.

  25. re-reading my last post, I proved I was not a math major. Tough to " split" 15 games. 9-6 or at least 8-7 would help the Nation's psyche though.

  26. I'll say they go 9-6 in the first 15. The schedule is definitely tough. However, after I got a chance to think clearly about today's loss there was a lot to be encouraged about. Optimism took a hit today, but it's still strong.
